Fertility Q & A

What is a healthy menstrual cycle?

Regular 28 days(25-35 days is a good range), little PMS, blood is bright red, no blood clots.

Understanding the different phases of your cycle and how you can better optimize...

Bleeding phase: most vulnurable and deficient time. It is advised that you keep warm, feet warm, don't swim in cold water. Nourish well.

Follicular phase: The time frame between your mentrual flow and ovulation is called the follicular phase. This is where the follicles grow and one follicle becomes dominant. So in TCM perspective, the follicular phase is considered the yin part of the cycle. Your discharge for ovulation is best when it's clear and stretchy, this discharge helps facilitate sperm to enter the uterus. In TCM, this is considered yin in nature. If one lack in this substance, you are likely yin deficient. Western drugs that interfere with cervical fluid are antihistamines, atropine, N-SAIDS, anti-depressants.

Ovulation phase: the dominant follicle releases an egg. Egg lives for 6-12 hrs after its released. Sperm can live for up to 5 days. So the prime time for starting intercourse would be 5 days prior to ovulation, 2 days before would be most optimal.

Luteal phase: the phase after ovulation. In TCM perspective, this is considered more yang part of the cycle.

What diet should I have to enhance fertility?

Generally, eating organic foods when possible is always a good call. Avoid meats that's been treated with hormones or fish that contains mercury. Eat more food with essential fatty acids, like soy products, seeds, wild caught salmon, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, basically winter vegetables and dark green vegetables. Best to avoid(otherwise cut back) on caffeine and alcohol. Foods to nourish kidney essence: chicken, duck, eggs, seeds, nuts, oysters, seaweed and algae. Food that nourish blood/yin: Fruits: raspberries, blackberries, pineapples, grapes, apples. Vegies: beans, turnip, greens. Protein: tofu, fish, chicken, soup stocks. Avoid: Spicy and pungent foods. Foods that nourish yang: winter squash, ginger, grains, cabbage, kale. Avoid cold foods, cold drinks.

I want to try acupuncture with my IVF, is it too late to start?

Recent studies suggest that having acupuncture with your IVF or IUI can improve your chances of up to 65%(1).

Although we recommend treatments a few months prior to your IVF to address more underlying issues, studies have shown that even the few treatments around the time of IVF are beneficial and helps enhance the chances of pregnancy.

I am pregnant now, is acupuncture still safe?

Especially for patients who has had previous miscarriages, I recommend acupuncture treatment up to the end of the first trimester. I've found that those of my patients who are consistent with a weekly session of acupuncture are able to safely carry to full term. Not only is it beneficial in supporting the pregnancy, it also alleviates symptoms such as nausea, headache, insomnia. Those with autoinmune deficiency symptoms have found it a great support for their pregnancy term.

What is cupping?

Cupping therapy is a component of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) that require placement of glass, plastic or bamboo cups on the skin with a vacuum. The therapy is used to relieve what is called stagnation in TCM terms, and is helpful in the treatment of back, neck, shoulder and other muscular pain. It is also useful for respiratory diseases such as common cold, pneumonia, and bronchitis. This suction helps to loosen muscles, encourage blood flow, and stimulate the peripheral nervous system. Cupping is thought to help with a variety of conditions, such as pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation, and well-being. It may also help reduce stress and tension, improve digestion, and promote healing. The most common side effects of cupping are skin irritation, bruising, and pain at the site of the cups.

Non Invasive therapy

A state of art technology that delivers patented wavelength transcutaneously and affects the cellular metabolic activity of a neuropathic nerve. Non-invasive, non-drug therapy delivered by a pen-like stimulation probe placed on the skin, often near the nerve or acupoint which it is associated with for your condition. Excellent option for those with chronic pain, neuropathy, headache, TMJ, frozen shoulder, gout, back pain.

About acupuncture

Acupuncture is a safe and very effective natural therapy that is used to heal illnesses, prevent disease and improve well being. It is a method within TCM(Traditional Chinese Medicine), which consists of inserting tiny, hair-thin needles into specific points along which “Qi” flows in the body. The points used are carefully chosen to disperse any blockages and bring the energy into balance. The needles may be gently stimulated to trigger the body's natural healing response.

How does it works?

Based on TCM theory, there are about 360 acupuncture points that runs deeply within the body tissue from head to toe. These points are connected via 14 invisible channels and collaterals. “Qi” which referred to as life force that flow via these channels helps regulate all physical and mental activities. Each acupuncture point(also called meridian) are associated with and capable of affecting organs such as liver, spleen, heart, kidney, reproductive system, etc. By stimulating the appropriate points, it helps restore the flow of energy to keep one balanced.

Does it hurt? and is it safe?

The procedure is painless. Tiny hair thin disposable needles are placed on the body to balance your natural energy. It has been described as feeling a mosquito bite. he World Health Organization has stated that "acupuncture treatment is safe if it is performed properly by a well trained practitioner. Unlike many drugs, it is non toxic, and adverse reactions are minimal". Kathy uses only pre-sterilized, ultra thin disposable needles that are discarded after one use.

How many sessions do I need?

It depends on the individual and what ailments are being treated. For most chronic conditions, 6 – 8 sessions tend to offer the best results. Since every individual has a different constitution, some can benefit after 1 session and others may take more cumulative sessions to notice the benefits. For infertility cases with those undergoing complementary IVF or IUI cases, ideally a head start of 2-3 months, otherwise any treatments prior to the process would be beneficial.
